The Edmonton Tsunami Water Polo Club is thrilled to congratulate Lexi Marissink who recently signed an NCAA Division 1 scholarship to Indiana University! Lexi will be joining the IU Hoosiers in the fall of 2020 where she plans to study Biology.

During her career in Edmonton, Lexi has distinguished herself as an elite athlete with an unrelenting work ethic. Wearing her heart on her sleeve, Lexi is a leader at Tsunami. Her competitive edge, versatility, charismatic leadership, and ability to step up when the stakes are high will allow Lexi to transition into the NCAA seamlessly and continue to be a difference maker for her team.

“Lexi proved to me over and over her commitment to being a successful student-athlete. Watching her play for her home club team, a club in California, as well as her national team proved her versatility as a player and ability to fit any role the team needs. Lexi has a true passion for our sport and her excited, yet driven, personality will lead to her success at IU.”
- Taylor Dodson, Indiana University Women’s Water Polo Head Coach

Lexi has been a key piece of the Tsunami NCL program for the past two seasons; medaling at every Western and National Championships event she has competed at. Her teammates and coaches look to her at crunch time as Lexi thrives under pressure. Perhaps her greatest trait is Lexi never waivers in her ability to be a good teammate. Lexi is a culture player who enhances the dynamic of any team environment. Whether this be through quiet leadership, bringing humour to difficult situations, offering encouragement when needed, or her determination to never give up, Lexi’s contributions at Tsunami will continue after she leaves.

Beyond her accomplishments at Tsunami, Lexi has an impressive international water polo resume. As a three-time identified athlete on Team Canada lists, Lexi most recently represented her country in Trinidad this past August where her team finished second at the Youth Pan American Games. Lexi is a three-time member of the Team Alberta provincial program and gives back to the Alberta community through her role as a provincial level referee.

“I have been fortunate enough to coach Lexi at the club, provincial, and national level. I can say with confidence that Lexi strengthens any team she plays for. She is a dynamic player at both ends of the pool and I have always been blown away by the energy and passion Lexi exudes. Indiana has gained an outstanding individual in Lexi and I can’t wait to watch her play next season.”
- Raine Paul, Tsunami Head Coach

Tsunami athletes may recognize Lexi from around the pool where she acts as an assistant coach for our U14, U12, U10 and U8 teams. Lexi strengthens the Tsunami coaching team through her passionate and energetic approach to mentorship.

“Lexi is a dynamic player and leader with the potential to be a stand-out at the NCAA level. Her presence on the pool deck will be greatly missed at Tsunami, but we are all excited to follow her next chapter as a Hoosier!”
- Emily Riddle, Tsunami Assistant NCL Girls Coach

“Lexi is a very exciting player to watch. She is a two-way player who attacks hard on offence and brings control on defence. Lexi scores big goals under pressure, plays shut-down defence when needed, and brings the best out of her teammates. I am excited to see Lexi succeed at Indiana.”
- Christopher Toy, Tsunami Assistant NCL Girls Coach

Congratulations Lexi and best of luck in this next chapter. Let’s go Hoosiers!

The Edmonton Tsunami Water Polo Club is excited to announce the Nancy Toy Athlete Assistance Program opportunity for NCL families (U14/U16/U19 athletes). This program is designed to aid families with the expenses associated with high-performance athletics. For the 2019-20 season, the Nancy Toy Athlete Assistance Program will award $3,200.00 in scholarships.

As a mother who watched her two sons grow up in the water polo community, then advance to the national and collegiate level, Nancy appreciates the positive impact sport plays in the lives of youth. Nancy also understands the financial demands this places on families and is a firm believer in making sport affordable to all. She is passionate about providing funding opportunities to the dedicated, hard-working and deserving families at Tsunami. We thank Nancy for her generous support and pivotal role in establishing this assistance program, which has also received funds from other donors.

Athletes/families interested in applying for funding must apply through the Tsunami website no later than October 31, 2019. We encourage families (athletes and parents) to apply for funding together. All applicants and application information will be kept confidential. Applications are limited to one per family.

The scholarship committee will review applications and successful applicants will be contacted by November 10th, 2019 via email indicating a credit amount that will be applied to their NCL account.

Tsunami is excited to announce that we will be partnering with Goliath High Performance Training for the 2019-20 season! Our U16 and U19 teams will work with Goliath Strength and Conditioning coaches Jordan Taylor and Jaco Labuschagne twice a week to develop weight room literacy, target underdeveloped muscle groups to reduce injury risk, and gain strength to translate into the pool.

Jordan Taylor is the founder and Director of Human Performance at Goliath and will act as Tsunami’s head strength and conditioning coach this season. Jordan comes to Tsunami with years of experience working with youth sports teams and is excited to dive into the world of water polo. In addition to Jordan’s role at Goliath he is also the current Men’s Volleyball Assistant Coach at MacEwan University after four seasons as the Assistant Coach for the NAIT Men’s Volleyball Team.

Jaco Labuschagne will be Tsunami’s Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach and work closely with Jordan. Jaco specializes in injury prevention/rehabilitation training and believes in instructional leadership. Not only will Jaco provide critical feedback to atheltes, but also give them a better understanding of their bodies and why they are doing certain movements/exercises.

Welcome to the team Goliath, Jordan and Jaco! This new collaboration with Goliath will add another layer to the Tsunami NCL training program and continue to establish Tsunami as one of Canada’s most dynamic and exciting NCL programs.
