The Edmonton Tsunami Water Polo Club is looking to hire a Head Coach to lead our club starting in June 2022. The successful applicant will be a self-starter who has a strong work ethic and water polo resume. Tsunami offers a great community culture and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the Canadian water polo landscape. As the Head Coach, you will work closely with the Tsunami Executive Board. This is a part-time position that can be paired with either of the roles below to become a full-time position:

Since 1981 The Edmonton Tsunami Water Polo Club has been a key piece of the water polo landscape in Edmonton, Alberta and Canada. At Tsunami we strive to promote, expand and strengthen water polo in Edmonton. Tsunami is a high performance water polo club for athletes ages 13 and older and our mission is to assist athletes achieve their athletic and personal goals. Through our dynamic, inclusive and high performance environment we will empower members with the tools to become the best athletes, teammates and leaders they can.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with the General Manager to develop and implement all club programming to achieve both long and short-term goals for the club, teams and athletes.

  • Manage and continue to develop the Tsunami coaching team and emphasize professional development not only for themselves, but for all coaches under their leadership. 

  • Administer the Tsunami Coach Mentorship Program to develop current and future coaches in the Edmonton community.

  • 10+ hours of weekly on-deck coaching working directly with Tsunami athletes to develop the technical, tactical and team skills needed to succeed at a national competition level.

  • Attend Tsunami tournament/game events. This will include roughly 12 NCL weekends each season and potentially one domestic/international club-wide training trip each year.

  • Work with the General Manager to create an ongoing recruitment strategy which focuses on the long-term and sustainable success of Tsunami.

  • Work with the General Manager to coordinate team registration (NCL and other tournaments), roster submission and event logistics for all tournaments.

  • Work with the General Manager to manage club communication platforms and social media accounts and marketing initiatives to create an active digital footprint which promotes the club, celebrates athlete/team success, engages the community, and recruits athletes to Tsunami.

  • Work with local clubs to foster strong club relationships which support the growth of water polo in Edmonton, Alberta and Canada.

  • Assist the General Manager and Executive Board in coordinating club social activities which may include but are not limited to alumni games, start of season kick-off, team holiday parties, tournament hosting, year-end awards celebration, and the AGM. 

  • Work with the General Manager and Executive Board to meet the objectives outlined in the 2021-2026 Strategic Plan.

  • Support the board and general manager with tasks as they arise and attend monthly board meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 4+ years experience in water polo coaching and team management. Successful candidates must possess a thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of water polo.

  • Minimum NCCP certification at the Competitive Coach level, or willingness to complete all Water Polo Canada coaching requirements ASAP. 

  • National Team, NCAA, Provincial Team, or international experience as a coach/athlete considered an asset.

  • University degree(s) or diploma in sports management, business, marketing, communications, leadership, or related field considered an asset.

  • Comfort with different digital systems such as WordPress, TeamSnap, RAMP, Quickbooks, SquareUp, social media platforms, Google Accounts, etc.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for a variety of mediums and audiences.

The ideal candidate:

  • Is familiar with the Edmonton water polo landscape and Tsunami history. A strong understanding of the Alberta and Canadian water polo landscape is important for this role.

  • Is creative and innovative in developing unique ways to grow the Edmonton water polo community and establish a strong club culture. The ideal candidate is dedicated to the Edmonton Tsunami mission and is passionate about water polo, sport and youth athletics.

  • This individual should have a strong long-term vision for the program and the leadership skills to execute this vision.

  • Demonstrates exceptional interpersonal skills and is able to interact positively and build strong relationships with athletes, coaches, officials, parents, volunteers and AWPA/WPC representatives.

  • Is a self-starter with program management, time management, and strong organizational skills and has the ability to think strategically and take all perspectives into consideration when making decisions.

  • Can manage competing priorities in a high-volume and time-sensitive environment.

  • Demonstrates resourcefulness and independence, but also successful working in a highly collaborative team environment.

  • Is available to work nights and weekends in order to attend team training and competition events.
